A Hero’s 5K to present gift to Upstate Warrior Solution on Armed Forces Day

Greenville, SC – The third annual A Hero’s 5K Run & Walk was held on February 2, 2013, at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. The event raised $14,072.48, and those funds will be presented to the newly formed Upstate Warrior Solution today, May 18, at 7 p.m. at the Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration during the Greenville Drive Baseball Game.  The presentation will be made by Gold Star Parents, Steve and Debby Whitsitt, during the second inning break. The Whitsitt’s, along with representative of Upstate Warrior Solution will be available for interviews immediately following the presentation in front of the Verizon Power Alley on the third base side of the stadium.

A Hero’s 5K exists to raise awareness of the sacrifices made each day by the United States Military, and to raise money to support the needs of South Carolina servicemen and women and their families. A Hero’s 5K was launched in 2010 by Cheryl Childers and Debby Whitsitt, mother of Greenville native, SPC Geoffrey Whitsitt, who died January 13, 2010, at Combat Outpost McClain, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Geoff’s parents reside in Landrum, SC, and his brother, Steven, serves on active duty in the United States Navy.

The 2014 A Hero’s 5K will be held at Furman University on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Further event information is available at www.aheros5k.us. Volunteers are needed now to help organize the event.
